Synopsis
A NATURAL HISTORY OF THE OCEANS.
Sir David Attenborough narrates this critically acclaimed series that dives deep into the marine environment of Planet Earth. Although two-thirds of the world's surface is covered with water, scientists know less about the oceans than they do about the surface of the moon. This limited series travels from various coasts to the poles to examine watery denizens ranging from the gigantic blue whale to microscopic coral polyps.

The ocean is filled with mystery, yet so beautiful - I understand why people want to dig deeper and discover more from the unknown.

Before the BBC perfected the nature documentary with Planet Earth, they explored the vast ocean with their 2001 miniseries The Blue Planet. While it's clear that this is one of their beginning efforts, it still holds a lot of value as a documentary series. For one, undersea life was largely a mystery back in 2001. While the knowledge of aquatic animals has slightly improved over time, the venture into the deep seas offers the audience with footage of aquatic life they'd never get to see otherwise. I can only imagine how valuable this information was back when The Blue Planet came out. Or at the very least, what the experience might've been like, viewing sea life that no one knew…

Might this be the greatest natural history documentary of all time? I'll have to rewatch Planet Earth before I can be sure, but for now, the intense passion and ambition of every single cameraman, researcher, producer, and scientific mind involved in The Blue Planet elevates it beyond any other documentary I can think of.
Across eight hour-long episodes and for the very first time ever, The Blue Planet takes you through pretty much every aquatic habitat on Earth, showcasing countless species (many never before discovered, let alone filmed) and contextualising our planet's marine animals, plants, and ecosystems. And watching the making-of shorts after each episode connects you even further to those natural worlds that seem so inaccessible.
My highlight of…
